Tunisian presidential candidate Nabil Karaoui released from prison

218News correspondent in Tunisia said the presidential candidate Nabil Karaoui was released from prison Wednesday night amid hundreds of loyalists celebrating him.

This comes after a Tunisian court ordered his release On Wednesday. Karaoui is accused of corruption and has been in jail since August 23.

Rida Belhaj – a member of Nidaa Tunis and Karaoui’s lawyer – told 218News that this decision by the court put things back on track after the candidate had been deprived of his freedom and participation in his own election campaign, undermining his party’s chances in the parliamentary elections

Karaoui came third in the first round of Tunisian elections last month after the first Kais Saied. The second round is scheduled for October 13.

The spokesman for Karaoui’s election campaign, Hatim Al-Mliki, accused Ennahdha Party of being behind jailing Karaoui and trying to eliminate him by amending elections legislations.

He told 218News earlier that no one can convince Tunisians how dangerous would Karaoui be out of jail, especially after he made it to the second round.
