Libyan coastguards rescue 148 illegal immigrants

Libyan coastguards rescued Friday 148 illegal immigrants who were on three different dinghies – two 90 miles off northern Abu Kammash shores and one 60 miles off northern Sabratha.

The media office of the Libyan Navy Force said the first patrol of the Tripoli-based Coast Guard carried out the rescue operation after receiving a distress call from the dinghies.

In a statement on Saturday, the media office said the illegal immigrants included 15 women and 11 children and they were all from Morocco, Algeria, Egypt and Somalia in addition to other African countries.

The statement said the immigrants were taken to Coast Guard station at the Tripoli port and then they were sent to Anti-Illegal-Immigration Authority’s Tariq Al-Sikka detention center.
