Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport reopens after repetitive attacks

The Minister of Transportation of the Government of National Accord Milad Matoug has announced the reopening of Mitiga Airport in Tripoli, saying resumption of flights will be as per the schedule and readiness of airliners, which he said could take from one to two weeks.

The GNA’s Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha said that together with the Transportation Ministry, they will form a joint committee to make sure that the airport is a civilian facility as the UNSMIL exerts efforts to ensure there is no military presence at the Mitiga Airport.

The UN envoy Ghassan Salame reassured that the airport is clear of any military presence, including the runway, arrival and departure lounges, saying there is no justification for any more attacks on the airport.

Salame said UNSMIL will open its own travel lounge for its flights at Mitiga Airport that could also be used by diplomats and for repatriation of illegal immigrants.

Mitiga Airport was shut down and all flights were redirected to Misrata Airport, which was also attacked, after repeated attacks.
