Bashagha attends Anti-ISIS Coalition meetings in Washington

The Interior Minister of the Government of National Accord Fathi Bashagha, Foreign Minister Mohammed Sayala arrived Thursday in Washington to meet with US State Department officials.

Sources told 218News that the meeting will discuss military escalation and war in Tripoli that has been ongoing for over six months.

The sources said the meeting is held by the US for the countries taking part in the international coalition against ISIS, adding that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Defense Secretary, and NATO Chief.

The GNA Foreign Ministry is trying to normalize relations with Washington after losing lots of international support, including Donald Trump’s clear support for the Commander of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar in his fight against terrorism in Libya.

Bashagha and Sayala held Wednesday meetings Wednesday with US officials prior to their main meeting with the US Secretary of State to discuss cooperation in achieving stability and security and coordination in fighting terrorism.

Before those meetings, the Libyan delegation met with US Treasury officials to discuss cooperation in fighting money laundering and terrorism sponsoring as well as in sanctioning economic crimes’ perpetrators.

Bashagha’s visit to the US comes at the same time as Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el Sisi is visiting the UAE and before his upcoming visit to Berlin to discuss the date of the international conference on Libya.
