Washington conveys messages to Moscow through Libya

The call of the US on Libyan National Army forces to end the offensive on Tripoli, after a meeting with officials from the Government of National Accord as part of the agenda of the meeting for the Anti-ISIS Coalition, raised may questions.

Observers say that there has been no development in the US stance regarding the ongoing conflict in Libya since the call between US President Donald Trump and the commander of the Libyan National Army Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. A call that was considered at the time a greenlight for the military operation of the LNA in Tripoli in last April.

The call was coupled with a US veto against a Security Council resolution that condemns the military operations in Tripoli. The veto was shared, for the first time regarding Libya, with Russia.

Others think that the latest American call is a support for one party over the other on the ground, yet polling sites say the US stance is one that is intended as a message for world powers before the upcoming international conference on Libya in Berlin.

Analysts also see the US stance connected to the New York Times report that said Russian Wagner Group had deployed mercenaries linked to the Kremlin in Libya and that is why Washington is trying to take measures to undermine Moscow’s attempts to find a foothold in Libya, which Russia denied altogether.

The US new position comes months after silence and ambiguity toward the ongoing fighting in Tripoli. Today, GNA is closer to the US administration that is claiming that is working on hindering future external interventions in Libya, which could lead to making the Libyan crises more world-governed and a proxy war, knowing that the air bridge between GNA and Turkey is still open for support of weapons and logistics.
