GNA Interior Ministry: Bashagha’s visit to Washington was upon formal invitation

The Interior Ministry of the Government of National Accord (GNA) said the visit of Minister Fathi Bashagha to the United States was upon a formal invitation, adding that the meetings held in Washington revolved around fighting terrorism, organized crime, illegal immigration and “military operation in Tripoli” accusing the Libyan National Army’s operations of undermining GNA efforts to achieve peace and stability.

The meetings of Bashagha with US officials included meetings with deputy secretary of state, officials from Treasury Department, Defense Department, and White House deputy national security adviser.

The Interior Ministry said the meetings discussed cooperation between the US and GNA on security, military, and economic levels, stressing that the officials reiterated that securing borders, fighting terrorism and stabilizing Libya can be done only with military, security and economic reforms and that the LNA should halt its offensive on Tripoli.

The GNA Interior Ministry said in its statement that it wants to work with all neighboring and friend countries to fight terrorism, saying that any groups that use force to create chaos and destabilize the country are similar to the threats of terrorist groups.
