Turkish Foreign Ministry: Agreement with Libya’s GNA doesn’t include sending troops on the ground

The Turkish Foreign Minister Mavlut Çavuşoğlu said the security MoU between Turkey and Libyan Government of National Accord doesn’t include sending troops to Libya to help GNA fighters.

Çavuşoğlu said his country hadn’t received any call from Libya until now to send troops after the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country was ready to deploy troops to help GNA fighters if the GNA requested.

Erdogan’s statement stirred questions about the legality of sending troops on the ground in Libya to escalate the fighting and violate the the UN arms embargo that has been valid since 2011.

Erdogan’s statements were also rejected by many local and international actors and were rendered as an indication that the GNA is desperate and incapable of carrying on in the battle.
