Libya’s Skhirat Agreement: Four years of “backwardness”

17 December 2015 was the day when the Libyan political scene was changed with si many aspirations by Libyans for an agreement that can end the bloodshed and division caused by Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn) Operation.

After round-the-clock meetings by the UNSMIL for all warring parties in Libya and under the supervision of the then-envoy Martin Kobler and before him Bernardino Leon, the Libyan Political Agreement was signed in Morocco’s Skhirat resort with hopes for better social, economic, security and political lives in Libya.

The Government of National Accord was given birth to by the Libyan Political Agreement and every Libyan hoped that it could help bridge the gap among the conflicting parties and unite the country as well as preserve its sovereignty.

The GNA entered the capital by sea with an international community recognition card in hand, promising Libyans that it would make change in 100 days after which Libyans will have stability and security and vowing that it would start with security arrangements and economic reforms.

Today marks the fourth year anniversary for the Skhirat agreement and none of the promised have been materialized, yet things got worse as the GNA was proved fragile and weak, especially in dealing with armed groups that are controlling the capital and widely; the GNA and its state institutions.
