Russia to export one million tons of wheat to Libya

The Head of the Russian Contact Group on Libya Lev Dengov told Sputnik that Moscow will export to Libya one million tons of wheat starting from the beginning of 2020.

Dengov said the agreement to export wheat to Libya was made with the Government of National Accord as they both signed a MoU before signing the contract in the coming days.

The agreement came after negotiations by three Russian firms with the Libyan Agriculture Ministry of the GNA.

Over 20 years ago, Libya used to produce about 400.000 tons of wheat before the number dropped to 250.000 tons in 2010. The production was resumed by 2018.

Last year, Libya started producing 160.000 tons a year as per official data, which says Libyans consume about 1.3 million tons of wheat per year.
