Conte urges Haftar to de-escalate military operations in Tripoli

The Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has called on the General Commander of the Libyan National Army Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar to de-escalate in Tripoli in a meeting on Wednesday in Rome.

The Italian government said in a statement that Conte warned of the dangers that face the stability of Libya and the region, urging for abandoning the military solution.

As the meeting between Haftar and Conte was ongoing, Italian media said the Head of Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj was heading to Rome coming from Brussels to also meet with Conte in a separate meeting, yet he changed his destination to land in Tripoli.

Conte also reaffirmed to Haftar that Italy backs up the political solution to the Libyan crisis as the only way for Libyans to end the conflict for good.
