German Foreign Minister visits Benghazi to meet Haftar

The German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas is visiting Benghazi to meet the commander of the Libyan National Army Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, according to The Washington Post.

The newspaper added that the visit comes as part of the German efforts to ensure the Berlin conference on Libya succeeds and establishes a permanent ceasefire.

Maas said earlier that Berlin conference backs up the fact that there is no military solution to the Libyan crisis and that all parties should resume the political process under the auspices of the UN away from foreign intervention.

He added that Germany hopes the parties take this opportunity as a chance to rebuild Libya by first agreeing to a ceasefire and engage in a UN-led dialogue.

Meanwhile, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel invited 11 countries to the Berlin conference that will be held next Sunday.

The invitations were sent to China, Egypt, France, Italy, Russia, Turkey UK, US, UAE, Congo, Algeria and high representatives of the UN, EU, AU, and Arab League.

The invitations included Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar and the Head of the Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj.
