Lawyer Al-Makhour suspends participation in Geneva talks in a letter to UN envoy to Libya

Lawyer Azza Kamel Al-Makhour sent a letter to the UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, regarding the suspension of her participation in the political dialogue held in Geneva.

She touched on the most important points that prompted her to take this step at a time when Libyans are counting on the outputs of the three tracks led by the UNSMIL to end the conflict in Libya.

The lawyer indicated that the present representation in the political track meetings is insufficient, unbalanced and does not reflect the entirety of Libya, adding that this is also contrary to the decisions of the Berlin Conference adopted by the UN Security Council, which confirmed the Libyan “ownership of the political track with adequate, effective and true Libyan representation for it.”

Al-Makhour expressed to Salame her discomfort with this incomplete representation of the conditions, saying it would increase the intensity and escalation of the ongoing armed conflict, and the possibility of its negative impact on the military, security and economic tracks.

She also suggested to the UN envoy to Libya, “the inclusion of Libyan intellectuals, professionals and experts in the political track, as opposed to Libyan politicians, some of whom seem to have an overlap between their personal interests and the interests of the country.”

She warned that “the current harsh conditions that Libya is going through require caution in launching a political dialogue without fulfilling its requirements and conditions.
