Stephanie Williams appointed as temporary Head of UN Mission in Libya

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced Thursday, the appointment of Stephanie Williams as the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, who will work as a special representative in Libya until the appointment of a successor to Ghassan Salame, who previously submitted his resignation from the mission for health reasons.

The Secretary-General – according to the official website of the United Nations – expressed his gratitude to the former envoy Ghassan Salame for his accomplishments as the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and his tireless efforts to restore peace and stability to Libya.

Williams has more than 24 years of experience in government and international affairs and has served as Deputy Special Representative (politician) at the United Nations Support Mission in Libya since 2018.

Prior to her appointment, she worked as the chargé d’affaires of the United States Embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, “Libya’s External Office”, and held various positions, including the Deputy Head of Mission in the American Missions in Iraq (2016-2017), and Jordan (2013-2015). ) And Bahrain (2010-2013), where she led the embassy as Chargé d’Affaires for 10 months.

She has also worked as a Senior Adviser on Syria and at US embassies in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Pakistan, in addition to other assignments in different countries.

Williams holds a master’s degree in Arabic Studies from Georgetown University’s Center for Contemporary Arab Studies. She is a distinguished graduate of the National War College, where she obtained a master’s degree in National Security Studies in 2008. She is a professional expert in the Middle East and a good speaker of Arabic.
