US former envoy to Libya reveals details of appointing Lemamra in place of Salame

The former US envoy to Libya Jonathan Winer has reiterated the importance of keeping the UN-led political process in Libya ongoing with assurances that the warring parties remain committed to it.

Winer said the US was exerting efforts to push for the continuation of political negotiations between the Libyan parties, referring the meeting of the American ambassador to Libya Richard Norland on the 11th of March with South African officials and the Head of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj.

The former envoy said that the meeting focused on the importance of the participation of African diplomacy in resolving the Libyan conflict, and rejecting the continuation of the conflict.

Regarding offering the name of former Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtan Lamamra to succeed Ghassan Salame, Winer said Lamamra knows the Libyan affairs well and has been active in efforts to help implement the Skhirat agreement in December 2015.

“In line with Algeria’s ideological commitment not to interfere with foreign countries in internal affairs, the appointment of Lamamra will be part of the ongoing United Nations efforts to remove foreign forces from Libya as soon as possible.” Winer added.
