UNSMIL welcomes Libyan parties’ positive response to ceasefire calls

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya welcomed Saturday the response of the Libyan National Army and the Government of National Accord to calls to end the fighting for humanitarian reasons.

In a statement, UNSMIL expressed its hope that the parties would commit to an immediate halt of hostilities on all fronts in order to provide an opportunity for local health authorities and healthcare partners to respond to the potential threat of the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.

The mission called on all parties to unite their efforts and work together to direct all energies and resources to support Libyans and local authorities in order to improve their capabilities to confront the threat of this epidemic and to prevent catastrophic consequences.

It also called for allowing the provision of humanitarian aid, the provision of goods and food without obstacles, and for giving the opportunity for WHO and its health sector partners to operate unimpeded across the country.

UNSMIL also expressed hope that the halt of hostilities for humanitarian purposes will eventually lead to the acceptance by the leaderships of the Libyan parties of the draft ceasefire agreement reached on February 23, facilitated by the United Nations, in the framework of the talks that took place in Geneva through meetings of the Libyan 5+5 Military Commission.
