Libya and Coronavirus: How will this country survive?

Dr. Salem Al-Hammali – a surgical consultant at Kettering Hospital in Britain, spoke at length about the novel coronavirus and its devastating effects on the world, urging Libyans at the same time not to panic because most of those infected with the virus have recovered.

Dr. Al-Hammali said in an interview with “218News”, on Sunday that the Corunavirus will infect hundreds of millions around the world, and the vast majority of their symptoms will be simple, indicating that the problem with this virus is that it is rapidly spreading along with its destructive capacity on the respiratory system, saying this begs for the need of artificial respiratory devices and ventilators in large numbers at hospitals.

Coronavirus and Libya

Dr. Al-Hammali stressed that the health system in Libya is weak, and now that system is required to confront a pandemic that major countries have been unable to explain, adding that the effects of Coronavirus will be more dangerous than anything else Libya has encountered throughout its history.

He pointed out that the health system in Libya is weak and cannot cope with the virus, saying that major countries such as Britain, France and the US were unable to confront it, so the responsibility is on everyone who is able to curb the spread of the virus.

What is Required?

Dr. Al-Hammali went on to say that fear and horror is not required now, and that destructive criticism does not benefit either, stressing the importance for all citizens to adhere to the precautionary instructions and to isolate themselves and their families as well as surroundings from the public.

“We must know how to stop the spread of the disease, and the defense lines must be strengthened. We must stop the blame now, healthcare rooms and ventilators should be operated in big cities, and the private sector should support the Coronavirus confrontation by an order of the state authorities, as they should harness all the capabilities to support the public sector.” The doctor added.

Feasibility of Quarantine

Dr. Al-Hammali called on anyone who shows symptoms of the disease, to remain at home, saying this is much better than going to a hospital where there are no services.

“Mild symptoms require staying at home, and whoever has shortness of breath must seek healthcare, while every person must protect himself, his family and his country, because failure to do so will harm all people.” He explained.

Dr. Al-Hammali pointed out that the cases in Libya are still few, yet there is a limited time and weak capabilities, saying Libyans must prepare for the development of injuries.

He called for allocating at least one hospital to a number of areas and to put in place a mechanism to reach patients in their homes to relieve stress.

Libya’s Problem

The doctor added that Libya suffers from a lack of medical equipment, and the state authorities must provide large places for isolation, yet this isn’t the priority because Libya lacks the sufficient number of doctors and nurses who also need devices to protect themselves from infection.

Al-Hammali pointed to the importance of not spreading terror in the hearts of people, saying the most important thing is to have control over the spread of cases until the Libyan health system is ready to deal with it.

He said that Libya is fortunate that it is one of the last countries that recorded Coronavirus cases, saying this allowed it to benefit from the experiences of other countries and take precautions.

Message to Libyans

Dr. Al-Hammali sent a message to Libya, saying they should take the matter seriously and cooperate with the state authorities, adding that criticism does not benefit nowadays.

“Now we have to obtain a positive result by reducing the spread of the disease and restraining it. There is no danger, there is more to Libya than the Coronavirus and its economic impacts.” He concluded.
