US, EU call for a halt of conflict in Libya

Coronavirus epidemic has undoubtedly dominated the talks between the European Union’s foreign affairs official and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, but Coronavirus has also affected the talks of the two parties and the future of their relationship, as they stressed the importance of joint cooperation and its impact in the Middle East and on their interests in Libya.

The Libyan crisis was in the agenda of the meeting, in which the two officials stressed the need to renew international efforts to tackle the situation in the country, end the armed conflict and give a greater opportunity to peaceful political dialogue in light of the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic that threatens the world.

Pompeo added in a tweet that the relationship of cooperation between US and the EU will be critical in order to advance their common interests in the region.

Pompeo and Borrell’s meeting comes at a time when Libya has witnessed European and American moves despite being preoccupied with the crisis of the epidemic that has claimed thousands of lives in both continents.

The European Union is still insisting on activating the new Irini mission to monitor the arms embargo in Libya and prevent external parties from continuing to Send arms shipments that support the ongoing conflict.

It is no longer a secret that there are efforts to limit influence of external parties, such as Turkey and Russia, as it is a common interest between Brussels and Washington to do so after the message of US ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, that said external parties were responsible for fueling the conflict.
