Libya’s High Council of State points fingers at EU’s Operation IRINI

The High Council of State (HCS) in Tripoli issued a statement regarding the statements of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Political Security and the European Council, expressing concern about what he described as the ambiguity surrounding “Operation IRINI”, which was launched by the European Union to monitor the implementation of the arms embargo to Libya.

The statement of the HCS stressed that the European Union insists on monitoring sea only, while turning a blind eye to implementing any measures to monitor the eastern and southern land borders of Libya from which various arms shipments and fighters enter – according to the statement.

The statement accused the EU operation of ignoring the air cargo operations that bring mercenaries on planes that land at Benina Airport and Al-Khadim airbase continuously, casting doubt on the intentions of the operation and opening the door to wide questions about the real goals behind it.

The HCS called on the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord to play its role in demanding a clear explanation for this naval operation and to protest to the European Union over its practices that the statement deemed selective and give indications of bias in favor of the military coup attempt that Khalifa Haftar is leading – according to the statement’s accusations.
