Libyan Government backs up EU’s Operation IRINI

On Sunday, the Libyan Government expressed support for Operation IRINI, which had been launched by the European Union to monitor the arms embargo on Libya.

The government’s director of foriegn media, Malik Al-Sharif, said in a press statement that several countries, including Turkey, continue to violate the UN arms embargo by supplying the forces of the Government of National Accord with various types of weapons.

“We appreciate the efforts made by the European Union to implement the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council on banning the supply of arms to Libya and preventing the illegal flow of arms to armed and terrorist groups.” He added.

It is worth noting that the European Union launched Operation IRINI in late March to ensure the application of the existing arms embargo and to continue the training of Libyan coastguard personnel and to monitor criminal activity.
