Libya’s Economy Minister accuses Central Bank Governor of “benefiting black market”

The Minister of Economy and Industry of the Government of National Accord (GNA) Ali Al-Issawi, has called on the Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, Al-Siddiq Al-Kabir in an official letter to give the Ministry of Economy access to the database of the Central Bank of Libya to strike coordination between the two sides in the process of importing necessary goods to the country.

Al-Issawi expressed his dismay at the request of the governor, who demanded in a previous letter that the Ministry of Economy leaves the work of importing and supplying goods to the private sector.

The Minister of Economy and Industry said in the letter that was circulated on social media and which 218News managed to verify that the request of the governor of the Central Bank regarding the supply of goods was not “in his scope of authority”, stressing that the issue is related to the commercial policy that is specific to the ministry and not to other sectors.

Al-Issawi added that the delay of opening the letters of credit system by the Central Bank of Libya had affected Libya’s food stocks.

He indicated that the management of the governor of Central Bank of Libya of this crisis and his delay in opening the letters of credit system only benefits the interests of the black market, “shadow economy”, money laundering and directly contributes to undermining the local economy.

Activists on social media had circulated a letter by the governor of the Central Bank of Libya addressed to the Head of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj, confirming Al-Kabir’s intention to open the letters of credit system as of next Thursday, yet 218News couldn’t verify the letter, as the Central Bank did not publish the letter on its official platforms.
