Borrell: EU believes Libya’s crisis is linked to European interests

The European Union’s High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell has urged all parties to work for a ceasefire in Libya and a return to political dialogue.

“Everyone who wants peace in Libya must support European Union’s Operation IRINI.” Borrell said on Wednesday.

Borrell pointed out that the Operation IRINI, which aims to monitor the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution of arms embargo on Libya, does not yet have sufficient capacity to start its work, despite its official launch early this month.

Borrell described what is going on in Libya as a war of attrition that might lead to obstructing the Berlin process and the efforts of the United Nations as well as international players, including the European Union.

“In the face of the situation in Libya, the European Union understands that it must bear a large part of the responsibility in resolving the crisis, which not only increases the suffering of Libyans, but also affects security and stability in neighboring and coastal countries, in addition to threats to the interests of Europeans at large.” Borrell explained.
