Salame returns to politics with new position

After his absence for a couple of months since last March, the former UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, returns to the political scene, but this time within the Board of Trustees of the International Crisis Group, which works on analyzing and formulating international policies and preventing wars independently.

The international crisis group welcomed the return of Salame, who had served on its board of directors until 2016, including 4 years as vice president and co-chair of the board.

Its current president and chief executive officer, Robert Malley, described Salame as trustworthy and ethically honest, noting that he had worked to give a voice to the voiceless, with diplomatic skill and political independence.

Salame’s return comes after he resigned from his position as a UN envoy to Libya for health reasons. His resignation came a few days after he described the truce and the ceasefire agreement between the conflicting parties in Libya as collapsed, saying that the crisis in Libya entered a new turn, amid the rejection by the parties of the truce to end escalation.

The Crisis Group, to which Salame returned, includes several political and diplomatic personalities from 30 countries, most notably the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union Federica Mogherini, as well as the former commander of the US Special Operations Command, Admiral William McCraven.
