UNSMIL welcomes LNA, GNA’s acceptance to resume 5+5 military commission talks

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya welcomed the acceptance of the Libyan National Army and the Government of National Accord to resume ceasefire talks and related security arrangements based on the draft agreement that the mission presented to the parties during the talks of the Joint Military Commission (5+5) on February 23, 2020.

In its statement, UNSMIL reaffirmed that the return of the two parties to the dialogue represents a response to the desire and calls of the vast majority of Libyans who are eager to return to a safe and dignified life as quickly as possible.

The mission stressed the need for the parties to commit to fully delegating their representatives to the negotiations to enable them to complete the ceasefire agreement, a large part of which was accomplished in the previous two rounds.

In its statement, UNSMIL also called on the countries that support the parties to the conflict to respect what they agreed upon in the conclusions of the Berlin Conference, the various Security Council resolutions, especially resolution 2510 (2020), the arms embargo and the suspension of all forms of military support permanently.

UNSMIL commended the efforts of countries that have worked to make a successful return to military negotiations and efforts to return to political dialogue to end the conflict in Libya, and hoped that this support would continue during the upcoming talks to ensure more success.
