Turkey sends guided-missile frigate to Libya to take part in Sirte clashes

Bulgarian Military website has revealed, citing Turkish local sources, that Ankara has sent a G-class frigate to Libyan national waters.

The frigate, according to the sources, will aim to provide support to the Government of National Accord against the Libyan national army in the fighting in Sirte area.

The website touched upon the specifications of the Turkish Navy frigate, noting that it is a modernly updated version of the first class guided missile frigates of the American Navy, Oliver Hazard Perry.

It is primarily designed for air defense and is equipped with RIM-66E-5 medium-range surface-to-air missiles.

GNA forces, backed by Syrian mercenaries, are fighting to control the city, at a time when Turkish President Recep Erdogan has publicly stated that “the city of Sirte and its surrounding are important as they harbor oil wells, adding that after taking it, operations will be easier, adding that the presence of oil and gas wells makes operations sensitive.
