UN calls for transparent probe into Tarhouna mass graves

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, called for a thorough investigation into the file of mass graves discovered recently in the city of Tarhouna.

Guterres expressed a “profound shock” that he had been subjected to regarding the reports of the discovery of these graves, calling for a transparent investigation into this sensitive issue.

The Secretary-General indicated that the United Nations has offered to the Government of National Accord to assist in securing graves, identifying victims, and determining the cause of death before returning the bodies of the victims to their families.

On Thursday, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya said it was “following with concern the shocking reports of the discovery of at least 8 mass graves in the past few days, most of them in Tarhouna”.

In accordance with international law, the mission added, the authorities must conduct a prompt, transparent and effective investigation into reports of extrajudicial killings.
