In confirmation of what was reported by 218News, the commander of the US military command in Africa, “Africom”, General Stephen Townsend arrived in Zuwara on Monday morning to meet with the Head of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj, and the Minister of the Interior, Fathi Bashagha.
Zuwara municipality said that the city’s airport received the Ambassador of the United States of America to Libya, Richard Norland, who attended the closed meeting held in the Zuwara Senior Hall, in addition to the commander of the joint operations room, Major General Osama Al-Juweili.
Al-Sarraj met the commander of the US Command in Africa, General Stephen Townsend, in the Tunisian capital on August 27, 2019 in the presence of the US ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland.
The security situation was discussed at the meeting, especially the issue of combating terrorism in the region and the importance of addressing the threat of terrorist organizations.
Although AFRICOM is not currently present in Libya, the leadership continues to monitor the situation in the country and assess the practicality of a renewed US military presence once the security environment permits it.
