High Council of State says Egypt is using national security as pretext to intervene in Libya

The High Council of State verbally attacked the Speaker of House of Representatives, Aqila Saleh, because he welcomed Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s recent statements about Libya, which the High Council of State considered a violation of the sovereignty of a member state of the United Nations, the Arab League, and a founding member of the African Union.

The council said that Saleh tried to assume a legal authority – which he did not have – to welcome the Egyptian intervention in Libya, which had been in existence for the past 6 years, according to the statement.

The statement of the High Council of State added that the Egyptian National Security pretext, which has long been used as a justification for any Egyptian interference in Libyan affairs, needs as a solution the closure of Egyptian borders with Libya.

The High Council of State said that the call by the Egyptian President to recruit and arm the Libyan tribesmen is aimed to further stir up strife and entice Libyans to kill one another, warning against the Egyptian army being drawn towards “an adventure of intervention in Libya.”
