US rejects military escalation in Libya, urges for resumption of 5+5 talks

The US National Security Council urged to stop the military escalation in Libya, stressing the need to build on the progress made by the 5+5 military talks under the umbrella of the United Nations, in addition to the process of the Berlin Conference and the Cairo Declaration.

The United States called on both parties to the conflict in Libya to immediately return to negotiations and abide by the ceasefire resolution.

The rejection of the military escalation in Libya by Washington comes after Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi announced that any direct intervention by Egypt in Libya was “legal” due to the threats of “terrorist and mercenary militias” for the entire region.

Sisi stressed Egypt’s adherence to the option of a political solution in Libya, the launching of settlement negotiations between the two parties to the conflict under the auspices of the United Nations in accordance with the conclusions of the Berlin Conference, and the practical implementation of the Cairo initiative, noting that his country had been exposed to danger by terrorist and mercenary militias threatening its borders and security.
