US moves to deesclate military build-up in Sirte and Jufra

The US Embassy in Libya said that its Chargé d’Affairs Joshua Harris visited the city of Misurata on Monday to “consult with Libyan leaders to stop the military escalation in Sirte and Jufra, reopen the energy sector in Libya, and intensify Libyan efforts to demobilize, disarm, and reintegrate violent militias.”

The embassy added, in a statement, that Harris, during two meetings with Vice-President of the Presidential Council Ahmed Mitig and Minister of Interior of the Government of National Accord, Fathi Bashagha, renewed “the support of the United States for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Libya, and stressed the urgent need for foreign and mercenary forces to leave the country.”

“The embassy is ready to work with a comprehensive group of Libyan personalities from all over the country that reject foreign interference,” Harris said, reiterating the United States’ respect for Misurata’s contributions to fighting terrorism, according to the embassy statement.
