Maltese Foreign Minister holds talks in Tripoli

The Maltese Foreign Minister, Evarist Bartolo, will arrive in Tripoli today, Thursday, to meet his Libyan counterpart, Mohamed Taher Siala, to discuss the regional stability file in addition to the issue of illegal immigration.

It is expected that the Maltese Foreign Minister will also discuss how to strengthen cooperation between the two countries regarding issues of joint interest.

The Maltese government is under domestic pressure due to the arrival of illegal migrants, with about 200 people being taken ashore last week after being rescued by the Maltese Armed Forces.

Half of these migrants were found to have been infected with the Coronavirus, a sign of the deteriorating health situation in Libya, according to the Malta Today newspaper.

The Maltese Prime Minister, “Robert Abela” had traveled to Libya last May to secure the authorities’ cooperation on the issue of immigration after Malta and Italy faced a stifling crisis due to the increasing flow of migrants since the beginning of the year.

218News had learned from an informed source that a Maltese security delegation in addition to the Maltese ambassador to Libya arrived in Tripoli, on Tuesday, on an unannounced visit.

The same source pointed out that the visit of the Maltese delegation consisting of 14 personalities to Libya will continue for 4 days, during which they will meet officials of the Government of National Accord.

A delegation from the GNA headed by the Head of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj, went to Malta early last July and held joint talks with the Maltese authorities.

The Minister of the Interior of the GNA, Fathi Bashagha, said at the time that the discussions that took place between the two governments centered on the political, economic and security fields, adding that the GNA looked forward to the soon-to-be results of this special relationship between the two peoples.
