What are the signals of Trump administration’s active role in Libya’s crisis

An “active” but neutral role is the signal by which Washington opened its unprecedented involvement in the Libyan issue after months and years of content with repeated statements of condemnation and congratulations on holidays.

The last sign of this engagement was the request that Al-Sarraj received from the US ambassador to obtain a briefing on efforts to reach a final formula for a Libyan solution that would strengthen a permanent ceasefire, increase transparency in economic institutions, and advance the political process under the auspices of the United Nations.

It will be no secret for the simplest mind following the Libyan crisis that the Trump administration has escalated within one week its position on the “hot issues of Libya”, especially the oil shutdown, announcing in a statement that the White House strongly opposes foreign military intervention in Libya and its oil fields, referring to a personal follow-up from President Trump for the Libyan file to communicate with several leaders around the world.

Not a day passed since the statement, until US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo moved and opened a line of communication with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry, talking about a lasting and immediate ceasefire in Libya to preserve the stability of the entire region.

The financial sanctions imposed by the US Treasury on a Libyan smuggling network in Malta were the strongest sign of Washington’s role in the Libyan conflict, as it also issued a direct threat that it would continue to take concrete measures against those who undermine peace, security and stability in Libya.
