UNHCR says 45 migrants died in most tragic shipwreck off Libya in 2020

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have expressed grief over the death of at least 45 migrants and refugees on August;17, off the coast of Libya.

The two organizations described the accident as tragic and that it is the largest shipwreck accident recorded off the Libyan coast this year.

According to the official website of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, five children were among those who died when the ship’s engine exploded off the coast of Zuwara.

The two organizations call for a review of the countries’ approach to the situation after this recent tragic accident in the Mediterranean, and that there is an urgent need to strengthen the current search and rescue capabilities to respond to distress calls.
