Libya’s Presidential Council suspends Bashagha and places him under investigation

On Friday evening, the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord issued a decision to suspend the Minister of Interior, Fathi Bashagha temporarily, from work, provided that he appears for administrative investigation before the Presidential Council within 72 hours.

The Presidential Council stated in its Resolution No.562 of 2020 that the investigation with Bashagha will be regarding permits, permissions and providing the necessary protection for the demonstrators, in addition to the statements issued by him regarding the demonstrations in Tripoli and some cities over the past period and the consequences of those demonstrations.

The decision issued by the Presidential Council assigned the Undersecretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Brigadier General Khaled Ahmed Al-Tijani Mazen to run the ministry’s duties, granting him all the sovereign and administrative powers and competencies.

It is noteworthy that the August 23 movement condemned two days ago the besieging of the demonstrators in the Martyrs Square and their exposure to shooting with light and medium weapons by masked men, holding the Head of the Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj and Minister of Interior Fathi Bashagha the responsibility for the safety of the demonstrators legally and customarily, calling on the UN mission to open an investigation into the violations that affected the demonstrators and release about the detainees.
