UN Acting Envoy and Tunisian President discuss Libya

The President of the Republic of Tunisia received Wednesday at the Carthage Palace Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Stephanie Williams.

During the meeting, the latest developments in the situation in Libya and the international efforts exerted to re-track the political settlement of the existing crisis in Libya were discussed, and Kais Saed stressed the constants of the Tunisian position on the Libyan file calling for a comprehensive political settlement to this crisis that preserves the unity and sovereignty of Libya within the framework of an inclusive Libyan-Libyan dialogue.

During his meeting with the UN envoy, the Tunisian president stressed the importance of the neighboring countries’ role in pushing for a peaceful solution to the crisis, referring to the coordination and consultations between Tunisia and Algeria in order to achieve stability in Libya.

In this context, the Tunisian President reiterated his country’s welcome to the ceasefire agreement in Libya as an important step towards restoring stability and resuming the political process, stressing his country’s commitment to continue supporting the efforts of the UN mission to Libya to achieve its noble goals, expressing Tunisia’s readiness to continue standing by the Libyan people by setting up its capabilities and expertise to achieve stability and rebuild institutions, and to contribute to the re-launch of the political process by hosting Tunisia for a national dialogue that brings together the various components of the Libyan people, especially since his country is the country most affected by the situation in Libya.

Meanwhile, Williams expressed in a statement after the meeting that the United Nations thanked Tunisia for its continuous support for the efforts of the UN mission in Libya, adding that it was stressed during the meeting that the only solution to the crisis in Libya is a peaceful and political solution, referring to “the need to go” to the political dialogue as soon as possible given the dangerous conditions in Libya at the present time.
