US rejects partition, occupation of Libya, says no military solution to the conflict

The US Embassy in Libya has warned that Libya stands at a critical juncture, confirming its joining the UN mission and international partners in welcoming the announcement by the Head of the Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj and Speaker of Parliament Aqila Saleh on August 21 calling for a ceasefire, disarmament, resumption of oil sector operations and a return to talks Policy facilitated by the United Nations.

In a statement, the embassy stressed its opposition to any plan aimed at dividing Libya, its occupation, or imposing a foreign political settlement on the Libyans, adding that “the Libyan parties should lead the solution that will be reached in the best way through comprehensive political negotiations led by the United Nations and directed towards elections”.

The statement added that a political solution remains elusive as long as the external backers on both sides continue to feed the conflict. It also reiterated the United States ’rejection of any foreign military intervention in Libya, and that there is no military solution to the conflict.

According to the embassy, ​​the United States believes that “the peace process will succeed in Libya, but that will only happen when external parties stop feeding the conflict and support the peace process led by the United Nations.”
