EU to lift sanctions on Aguila Saleh, Nuri Abu Sahmain and Khalifa Al-Ghwell

Reuters cited European diplomats as saying that the European Union intends to remove the name of the Speaker of Parliament, Aguila Saleh, the former President of the General National Congress, Nuri Boushmin, and the former head of the National Salvation Government, Khalifa al-Ghwell, from the sanctions list.

According to what three European diplomats confirmed to Reuters, this step comes within the framework of encouraging peace efforts and ensuring that the House of Representatives plays a pivotal role in any settlement negotiated.

The European Union blacklisted the speaker of parliament in 2016, accusing him of obstructing peace efforts, but diplomats said he is now a key figure in efforts to bring the two sides of the Libyan conflict together.

A second European Union diplomat said that they are moving towards lifting Saleh’s name from the sanctions to send an indication to the ‘spoilers’, in reference to the obstructions to the tracks of peaceful dialogue.

The European Union also intends to lift the name and former President of the General National Congress, Nuri Bushamin and Khalifa Al-Ghwell, who declared himself head of the National Salvation Government.

Reuters cited a European Union diplomat as saying that there is now a window of opportunity for the European Union to act, adding that the Vice President of the European Commission Josep Borrell has been pressuring the European Union countries to reach a quick solution to the Libyan crisis and to realize the proximity and importance of Libya.

It seems that the European powers, after months of inaction, have become aware of the need to play a pivotal role in resolving the Libyan file, given the nearness of the migration routes in Libya to European shores, in addition to the energy resources Libya possesses.
