Schenker: Inflexibility complicates Libya’s crisis, as LNA and GNA under pressure

The US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, David Schenker, revealed the capacity of efforts made by Washington recently to “reform the United Nations mission in Libya,” reaffirming that there is no military solution to the conflict in Libya.

Schenker said the parties to the Libyan conflict are “very inflexible,” which complicates the scene and makes the situation difficult in Libya.

He added, in an interview with the “Brookings Institution”, that Libya is on the verge of turning into a new Syria.

Commenting on the possibilities of engaging the parties to the conflict in any prospective solutions; The US Assistant Secretary of State said: There are a lot of efforts being made by American diplomats and European partners, in addition to more “arms bending” to push the Government of National Accord and the Libyan national army to engage productively in the negotiations.

Schenker confirmed that he spends a long time alongside US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to discuss the Libyan crisis, in addition to his ongoing discussions with his British and French counterparts.
