The UN Security Council has agreed to name a new special envoy to Libya and a “coordinator” after more than six months of disagreement, according to diplomats.
Early next week, voting will take place on a draft resolution that will renew the United Nations Support Mission in Libya until September 15, 2021, and define the leadership structure.
According to Agence France-Presse, which has seen the draft decision: “The United Nations Support Mission in Libya should be led by a special envoy of the Secretary-Genera with a special focus on good offices and mediation with Libyan and international actors to end the conflict.”
The draft clarified: “The UNSMIL Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the mission and will be a director of approximately 200 staff.”
The UN Security Council will request Secretary-General António Guterres to “appoint his special envoy without delay”.
