The candidate to be seventh UN envoy to Libya

Diplomats have reported that the UN Security Council has agreed to appoint the Bulgarian politician and diplomat, Nikolai Mladenov, as head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.

Mladenov was born in May 1972 in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, and holds a Master of Arts in War Studies from King’s University in London, United Kingdom, and a Masters and Bachelor’s degrees in International Relations from the University of National and International Economy in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Nikolai Mladenov held the defense ministry portfolio in his country for nearly 7 months, from July 2009 to January 2010, and then was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in Bulgaria until 2013, in addition to his country’s representation in the European Parliament between 2007 and 2009.

Mladenov is considered one of the most prominent political figures who contemplated the issue of “AIDS children” in Libya in 2009, after five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor were accused of infecting more than 400 Libyan children with the virus.

The Bulgarian politician, who has experience in public service and international affairs, is currently head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq.
