Security Council extends mandate of UN Support Mission in Libya

The UN Security Council decided, in a closed session, to extend the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, for a year until September 15, 2021 as an integrated special political mission.

The mission’s extension decision stated that among its tasks is to continue implementing the Libyan political agreement, strengthening the comprehensive political process, and consolidating governance and security arrangements, in addition to the economic arrangements for the Government of National Accord.

The Security Council resolution stipulated the mission’s work in achieving a ceasefire, providing adequate support for its implementation, and supporting it in later stages of the transitional process, the constitutional process and the organization of elections, according to what was reported by the Turkish Anadolu News Agency.

The missions of the UN mission include: “Coordinating and closely engaging with international actors, including neighboring countries and regional organizations, providing support to Libyan institutions, monitoring and reporting violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.”

The Security Council called on the Secretary-General of the United Nations to appoint a new envoy to Libya, without delay, and to have a coordinator for it to be responsible for the day-to-day operations and management.
