Libyan talks on constitutional basis and track in Cairo

Cairo is hosting Sunday Libyan meetings for members of the House of Representatives, the High Council of State and members of the Constitution Drafting Assembly. The meetings will continue for three days to discuss the constitutional track in Libya under the auspices of the United Nations.

These meetings came after the US ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, held talks in Cairo with the director of Egyptian intelligence, Abbas Kamel; on supporting the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum and ways for deescalation in Libya.

The US embassy in Libya indicated that the US Under Secretary of State, David Hill, praised the efforts of the United Nations and the Libyan efforts to resume the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum aimed at charting the way to national elections.

The United States affirmed that it “will continue to engage stakeholders from all parties to the conflict, internally and externally, to stop the fighting and reach a peace agreement.”

It is noteworthy that members of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State reached last week important understandings regarding the mechanisms for appointing the occupants of sovereign positions in accordance with Article 15 of the Libyan agreement signed in Skhirat, Morocco on December 17, 2015.
