UNSMIL publishes names of participants at Libyan Dialogue Forum in Tunisia

The Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Stephanie Williams, announced the launch of political consultations between the Libyan parties within the process of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, which will begin its first meeting on Monday (October 26) via video call, and that the direct meeting will start on November 9 in the Tunisian capital.

The mission said in a statement Sunday: “The resumption of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum comes at a time of overwhelming hope following the signing of a permanent ceasefire agreement throughout Libya on October 23. In addition, the consultative meetings with many Libyan parties in the previous months, facilitated the re-launch of the Libyan Political Forum.

75 participants

The mission invited 75 participants from Libya, representing all political and social spectrums of Libyan society, to participate in the first meeting of the comprehensive Libyan Political Forum through the visual communication mechanism.

It explained that the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum is a comprehensive Libyan-Libyan dialogue that is held based on the outcomes of the Berlin Conference on Libya, which were approved by the Security Council in its Resolution 2510 (2020) and Security Council Resolution 2542, (2020).

The UN mission pointed out that the selection of the participants in the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum from different groups was based on the principles of inclusiveness and fair geographical, political, tribal and social representation.

According to the mission, the participants include representatives of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, in addition to the active political individuals outside the two institutions, confirming their commitment to the participation of women, youth and minorities.

It indicated that the first meeting of the members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum – via visual communication – allows access to the latest developments in the economic and military tracks and the path of human rights and international humanitarian law, as well as listening to the recommendations that resulted so far from the meetings held by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General with representatives of Libyan societies, including municipalities, women, youth and civil society organizations.

Interaction

The mission indicated that it will launch an interactive website to receive contributions from Libyans and their comments on the conduct of the forum’s work during the Tunis meeting, and future meetings within the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum process.

The mission called on all participants in the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum to assume their responsibilities before the Libyan people, engage constructively and in good faith in the talks, and place Libya and the public interest above all considerations.
