Williams at virtual Libyan dialogue session: Libya has unique chance for peace

The Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Stephanie Williams, held the first meeting of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, on Monday, via video call.

Williams said in the meeting, that Libyans are interested in “what will result from the dialogue and not who will participate in it,” adding that the Forum for Political Dialogue will not solve all of Libya’s problems, and that the country faces a unique opportunity that must not be missed.

In a statement, the mission indicated that during the meeting, members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum were briefed on recent achievements in the military and economic tracks, human rights and international humanitarian law, and the valuable recommendations and proposals presented by representatives of the consultative meetings held by the mission with groups of women and youth and with mayors of municipalities.

Addressing the forum, Williams said that the Libyans want “security, peace and a decent life for themselves and their children as well as respect and justice, unified and fair governance, and they want national unity, national sovereignty and a harmonious social fabric. ”

The participants urged for transparency, and stressed the importance of informing the Libyan people of the deliberations of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum. They also expressed their keenness to engage constructively and in good faith in the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum with the aim of drawing a comprehensive political roadmap that would put Libya on the path of democracy, unity and prosperity.
