First UNSMIL comment on detention of Libyans coming from Benghazi at Tripoli’s Mitiga airport

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya welcomed the decision of the Civil Aviation Authority issued on November 4 to allow the resumption of flights to all airports in the southern region.

In a statement, the mission pointed out that “a number of individuals from the East who traveled to Tripoli were arbitrarily arrested by armed groups,” noting that it is following this incident with concern.

Regarding the details of the arrests, the statement clarified that “at least one person was followed up to his destination in Tripoli and then he was arrested, then it was claimed that others were arrested at the airport upon their arrival.”

UNSMIL added: “These measures aim to sabotage the efforts to bring the Libyans together,” adding that the decision to resume the flights is the result of the confidence that was built as a result of the October 23 ceasefire agreement and follow-up talks for the Joint Military Committee in Ghadames on November 2-4.

The UN mission in Libya called for the immediate release of the detainees, and for fully respecting freedom of movement for all Libyans.
