Turkey opens air bridge to transport weapons to Libya

Turkey has opened an air bridge with more than one point in western Libya, in what is considered a dangerous development while the UN mission is trying to foster understandings in the political and security track.

Turkey registered its strong presence in Libya since its military intervention, which was legitimized by passing a resolution from within parliament by the majority of the members of the Justice and Development Party, the political arm of the “Muslim Brotherhood” group in Turkey.

The Turkish military intervention in Libya was to support the armed formations of the Government of National Accord, which was a strong factor for the GNA not to fall, after it was just just about to the lose.

Today, five months after the battles were over; the Turkish military presence in Libya is still evident, as several sources revealed that Turkey was building an air bridge, linking its military bases with the Misurata airbase and Al-Wataya airbase in the west of the country.

The airlift, which the Turks build and transport weapons and military equipment through it, comes at a time when Libyans are breathing a sigh of relief, after the UN mission has been able to activate the political and security tracks.

In the security track; there are meetings that are described as “very good” between the delegations of the National Army and the GNA, and in the political track; there is a dialogue forum, which is now proceeding in its second round virtually to reach final understandings for a transitional stage that would be an ideal prelude to holding presidential and parliamentary elections.

The Turkish role today, and this extended arms bridge, raises suspicion and increases speculation about the outbreak of a battle that will not be “Libyan-Libyan”, but rather, Libya will become a mere arena for it. As for the players, they are the regional countries that have been involved in the Libyan file for years.

This is a dangerous vision that may be realized due to the Turks’ extremism and their insistence on their military presence in Libya, as well as the detailing of solutions that only suit their interests.
