Russia accuses US of hindering appointment of new envoy to Libya

The issue of appointing a new UN envoy to Libya, which enjoys the consensus of local and international parties, remains pending, with the continuing dispute in the inner circles of the United Nations over the appointment of a new UN envoy to Libya to succeed “Ghassan Salame”, who resigned from his post in early March.

The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed his country’s concern about the failure to resolve the issue of appointing a special envoy of the United Nations to Libya, pointing to the United States’ obstruction of resolving the issue for several months.

In his virtual speech to the International Conference of Mediterranean Countries; Lavrov accused the United States of ignoring the position of the African Union and refusing to search for a compromise solution that suits all parties.

According to Sputnik, Lavrov confirmed that the progress of the political track in Libya has stopped and recent meetings did not result in any new progress.

According to the Russian minister; the main task of Moscow at this stage is to provide assistance from the international community to the Libyans; with the aim of overcoming the lack of trust between the Libyan parties and finding compromises without trying to impose ready-made decisions from outside or identifying one of the Libyan parties as a priority.

On the other hand, the UN Security Council denied, on Tuesday, reports about the imminent appointment of the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolay Mladenov, as the UN envoy to Libya.

This came during a press conference held by the President of the UN Security Council, the permanent representative of South Africa to the United Nations, Ambassador Jerry Matjela, on the occasion of his country’s assumption of the rotating presidency of the Security Council in December.
