Malta seizes largest cocaine smuggled shipment bound for Libya

The Maltese Customs Administration announced the seizure of a standard quantity of drugs, valued at 69 million euros, inside a cargo ship bound for Libya.

The search operation resulted in the confiscation of 612 kilograms of cocaine by the Maltese authorities, in an amount described as “the largest in the island’s history.”

The authorities said that the smuggled drug shipment was found in Malta’s free port, where smugglers deliberately hidden cocaine in a cargo ship inside platforms carrying cooking oil.

The shipment left Ecuador and moved through Colombia before it was intercepted by the Maltese customs on its way to Libya.

According to the newspaper “Malta Today”, the seizure took place during the examination of the cargo of one of the containers by scanning the goods, as the pallets carrying the goods appeared to be dense compared to the regular pictures, which prompted customs officers to unload and dismantle one of the pallets.

Packets hidden inside the tablet substrates were discovered, which were packages containing a white substance that gave a positive signal for cocaine.
