El-Jarih: Al-Sarraj and Bashaga are vying for power

The writer and political researcher, Mohammad El-Jarih, said that the current moves indicate that the President of the Presidency Council of the Government of National Accord, Fayez al-Sarraj, wants to continue in his position.

In an interview with “El-Jarih” on the “Al-Bilad” program on 218News; he said Al-Sarraj should go out to the people, and announce his desire to continue in power, pointing out that Al-Sarraj had announced last October his intention to resign, but what he and his advisors are doing is nothing but an attempt to cling to power.

Reducing the influence of “Bashagha”

“El-Jarih” reaffirmed that there is an open struggle for power and a cold war among armed groups and between Fathi Bashagha, who represents a part of the city of Misurata and which also enjoys the support of armed groups from this city, noting that some figures have recently returned to the scene in Tripoli, such as Haitham al-Tajouri, who is now holding meetings and wandering around the city, trying to build a new coalition in Tripoli to be against Fathi Bashagha or any other group from outside Tripoli.

El-Jarih described what “Al-Tajouri” is doing now with the “clear message” that Tripoli is for Tripoli people, and any group outside the city is prohibited from taking control of it.

“El-Jarih” added: “At the same time; we do not deny that Fathi Bashagha wants to reach power. Now we are heading in the direction of a direct collision that will occur during the coming period between “Al-Sarraj” and the armed formations loyal to him, such as the Tripoli revolutionaries, Deterrence Force, Ghiniwa Al-Kikli and others, and Bashagha, while the decision to subordinate Deterrence Force to the Presidential Council is not new. I think that there is an old decision (555) and perhaps this is an amendment or renewal of the decision, therefore; in fact, “Deterrence Force” belongs to the “presidential council”, and there may be certain modifications that Al-Sarraj wants to add.

“Al-Sarraj and Bashaga” Collision

El-Jarih pointed out that Fathi Bashagha is not only a minister of the interior, but a political man, and perhaps one of the smartest politicians in the political scene through his speech and the steps that he takes.

He is, first of all, an elected member in Parliament, and participated in Skhirat Dialogue, and then he became Minister of the Interior, because he represents a force inside the city of Misurata, and he was one of the most important leaders of armed groups in the city of Misurata in 2011.

“Bashagha proved that he supported the Libyan street speech when young people went out to the street on August 23, and defended their right to protest and because of that, a collision occurred between him and Fayez al-Sarraj,” El-Jarih said.

Returning to the indications of Al-Sarraj installing himself in power; “El-Jarih” said: “Al-Sarraj” not only wants to stay in power through these decisions, but makes deals from under the table to stay, communicates with members of dialogue and various blocs and makes great offers for survival.

“It must be known that Fayez al-Sarraj, Fathi Bashagha, Aqila Saleh and Haftar are personalities who want continuity in power, meaning that matters will remain as they are and will get worse. We are closer to a violent war and far from elections and a constitution, and today the competition between Sarraj and Bashagha is that al-Sarraj wants to stay in authority and Bashagha wants to reach the post of prime minister.” He added.

According to El-Jarih, “Al-Sarraj and Bashaga” are two figures who represent the origin of the crisis in Libya.

Alternative Solution

El-Jarih believes that the success of the political dialogue is the shortest and best way to bring about the required change and remove all the obstructive figures who have been at the forefront of the Libyan political scene for a long time, indicating that they are the cause of all crises, stressing that there are new personalities who can lead the next phase, “the year and a half.”

Chances of “75” committee’s success

According to “El-Jarih”, the “75” dialogue committee is facing, today, a real internal crisis in the way its affairs are managed when making decisions and has lost the ability to agree, and lacks the ability and knowledge to deal with this difference, which indicates that they are in a dead end.

“El-Jarih” indicated that Stephanie Williams, on her part, presented ideas and proposals that may help in the solution, and this was represented in the announcement of the existence of three specialized committees, namely the “Legal Committee, the Consensus Committee, and the Drafting Committee”, which will work according to a specific period of “60 days”.

“El-Jarih” concluded by saying that the refusal of the UN envoy, who was recently appointed, to Libya, Nikolai Mladenov, of the job means continuing in a new phase of instability.
