Libyan Political Dialogue Forum approves mechanism for selecting new executive authority by 73%

51 members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum voted in favor of the proposed mechanism to choose the unified executive authority, which represents about 73% of the votes cast, while 19 members voted against it, two members abstained, and two others did not participate in the process.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) conducted a one-day voting process, starting from Monday January 18 at 10.00 am until 10.00 am on Tuesday, January 19, when the mission requested members of the forum to vote on the proposal.

This came after agreement on the proposal for a mechanism for selecting a unified executive authority, which was reached by the advisory committee emerging from the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in Geneva on January 16.

Since the advisory committee’s proposal received 73% of the vote; it was decided to adopt the proposal by exceeding the required minimum set by the advisory committee by 63% of the vote.

The mission commended the members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, who participated in the voting process, due to their commitment to the “Libyan-Libyan” dialogue supported by the United Nations, appreciating their bearing of their responsibilities before the Libyan people.

The Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Mrs. Stephanie Williams, welcoming the voting process, said: “Today marks the first anniversary of the Berlin International Conference on Libya.”

She added: “With this vote, the members of the Forum took an important step towards implementing the roadmap that was adopted in Tunis in mid-November, and Libyans now have a real opportunity to overcome their differences and divisions, and choose an interim government to reunify their institutions through the long-awaited democratic national elections.”

She indicated that this is a temporary executive authority that will be replaced by a democratically elected authority, after the elections on December 24, 2021.”

It is worth noting that the United Nations Support Mission in Libya is finalizing the nomination procedures and forms, as well as a timetable for the voting process, which will be shared with all members soon.

It is expected that a committee from the forum will verify the submitted nomination applications to ensure complete transparency.
