Operations IRINI and Frontex join efforts to monitor arms embargo on Libya

European Union’s Operation “IRINI”, to monitor the arms embargo on Libya in the Mediterranean, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the European Agency for Border and Coast Guard “Frontex”; With the aim of focusing mainly on cross-border crime.

According to a statement issued by Operation IRINI, the commander of the operation, Admiral Fabio Agostini, and the CEO of Frontex, Fabrik Legere, signed the Memorandum of Understanding on January 15th.

The agreement provides for coordination in the use of satellite scenes and the exchange of information on commercial vessels suspected of violating the arms embargo imposed on Libya, which helps to gather the necessary reasons for conducting maritime interdiction and searches on suspicious ships.

Operations IRINI and Frontex will be able to coordinate their joint efforts aimed at promoting standards for integrated European border management.

This aspect could become increasingly important on the issue of Libyan navy and coast guard training.

For his part, the CEO of Frontex assured that Operation IRINI is an important partner, and Frontex will provide the necessary information to overcome security problems in the Mediterranean.
